I am a complete beginner to Aikido/ Martial Arts, will I be able to train?

Beginners are welcome at all training sessions and have the opportunity to fully participate right from the very first session. There are no requirements and experienced members will be on hand to give guidance and answer questions. All members of the school train together in a friendly atmosphere and work to help each other develop, with no pressure for any students to do anything that they are not comfortable with.

Will I get hurt?

Like all Martial Arts there is contact made in Aikido and the techniques used involve the use of throws and locks. All of our instructors hold nationally recognised qualifications in Coaching, Health & Safety, Child Protection and First Aid. Safety of the students is always uppermost in mind and this is shown by an extremely low injury rate spanning many years. Students train with consideration for each other towards a common goal of self-improvement, therefore disruptive behaviour is not tolerated.

What should I wear to train?

It is important to be wearing something that will allow good freedom of movement. Clothing may be held or used in techniques, so it is advisable to wear something that is relatively covering and not precious. Jewellery and earrings should be removed in the interests of safety. The traditional Judogi can be ordered through the school at a reduced cost to sports shops.

Do I need to be fit and healthy to train?

There is no fitness requirement to train in Aikido. The school contains members of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels and values the differences. When starting you will be asked to fill in a health screening application form.

Will I get fitter by training in Aikido?

The practice of Tomiki Aikido will improve you fitness level, from the practice of Randori (Free Practice) As instructors we are aware of the differences fitness levels of students, so you will not be forced into something that you are uncomfortable with.

Can I bring my children?

There is a class specifically for families on Saturday Afternoon, which runs parallel to the adult class (the adult class runs a little later) for those who wish to bring children and train themselves. Check training schedules for other classes and courses. Instructor hold qualifications in teaching children (Child Protection) and HSE First Aid.

Do women train at your school?

The school has a number of female students, who train alongside the men with no discrimination. The techniques that we practice do not require any strength and so can be used by anyone, At Present the School has two practising female Dan Grades (Black Belts) One of which is a nationally qualified coach accredited by City & Guild, CIEH, HSE, Skills Active.
